Fans have been eagerly anticipating this film since shooting first began on April 26, 2011. As “The Avengers” opens, there’s a buzz in the air, because the almighty Tesseract is emitting major waves of power and significantly low gamma rays. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) appears to be the man with the plan, but not for long. The Tesseract ends up opening a portal on the other side of the universe, and suddenly, the villainous Loki (Tom Hiddleston), is left standing in their presence. He quickly turns Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and the Professor Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) into his evil minions and escapes, leaving a huge hole in the middle of the earth. Nick Fury is to say, in the least, furious. He immediately initiates his precious plans, The Avengers, to battle the evil that could possibly destroy the world.
As Fury explains for those uninitiated in “Avengers” lore, “There was ...

It takes a lot for me to cry, but I was tearing up within the first five minutes at this week's advance media screening of the new documentary "Bully," opening nationwide Friday. The film is aimed at preventing bullying and features several teenagers who have faced bullying, some of them who even committed suicide because of the ongoing issue. There's no doubt we've always been lectured on the topic, whether it was at assemblies, by our peers or on television. We knew it was bad. Viewing the movie, however, shed a whole different light on the issue. It is worse than bad.
When I found out the movie was rated R, I was shocked because kids are the ones who need to see this film most. After a few edits were made and through pressure from the media, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) decided to change ...

This Saturday at 8 p.m. on USA Network, President Barack Obama will introduce a digitally re-mastered and fully restored edition of the 1961 drama “To Kill a Mockingbird.” This week at VOX, our teens had a chance to screen the 50-year-old classic black and white film based on Harper Lee’s beloved Pulitzer Prize winning 1960 novel. In the reviews below, VOXers share their thoughts on the film.
“To Kill A Mockingbird,” yes, as in that old boring book your literature teacher forces you to read at school. But have you seen the movie? This poignant classic tells the tale of Atticus Finch, a lawyer in Maycomb County, Alabama who is given the tough task of defending a black man in racist 1930s America. Amidst all of the events that take place because of Atticus’ decision to represent Tom Robinson, Scout and Jem (Atticus’ children) do not miss a single event. ...

Songs that Inspire Me
Common: “Cloth,” “The Believer” and “The Dreamer” ft. Maya Angelou
The reason why I like these songs from Common is because they are mostly talking about what’s happening in the world, and he is telling people to dream on and to believe in yourself and your goals.
Kanye West & Jay-Z: “Murder to Excellence”
When Kanye and Jay-Z come together, they make good music like “Murder to Excellence.” They are talking about how people are dying in sad ways all around them.
Bad Meets Evil (Eminem and Royce Da 5’9): "Take From Me"
Bad Meets Evil’s song is about other rappers stealing lyrics and using them as their own and saying they can’t really trust anyone.
Drake: “The Motto” ft. Lil Wayne
I like the song (mostly the beat) but it’s different for Drake because it’s a departure from his old stuff. It’s ...

The American Dream gets a dark, sultry 1940's twist in Lana Del Rey's debut album "Born to Die." A self described "homage to her youthful days of recklessness," "Born to Die" debuted at #1 in over 15 countries and is set to dethrone Adele's "21" (gasp!) here in the US, debuting at #2 on the Billboard Top 200. Lana herself is just as quickly rising to fame. A self-proclaimed "gangsta Nancy Sinatra," Lana (real name Lizzy Grant) is absolutely intoxicating. With flowing auburn hair and lips plumper than a Georgia peach (a little help from Botox, no doubt), Lana's got the aura of a 40's jazz singer; mixing contemporary sex appeal with old Hollywood glamour, all underneath a veil of girlish charm.
"Summertime sad core" as she describes it, the album sounds like nothing our generation has heard before; symphonic orchestral sounds layered over pounding bass. Operatic vocals intertwine with ...
